SUMMARY:Centennial Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:Featuring a Bonsack Gallery opening for beadist Jan Schwab Huling ’72\, food trucks and drinks in the Quad\, entertainment\, and more! \nOver 600 people joined us for the Centennial Launch Party on Friday\, October 7\, which began with beadist Jan Schwab Huling’s ’72 art show\, Jiggity Jig\, in the Bonsack Gallery and then moved into the Quad with food trucks and fire pits. \nThere was also a special Centennial-themed program in Haertter Hall that highlighted our school’s history\, announced our Centennial goal of 100 scholarships and a $100 million endowment\, and showcased special performances from our talented community — Kennedy Holmes ’23\, Jacob Tuteur ’23\, renowned jazz pianist and past parent Peter Martin and the Burroughs men’s acapella group. The group sang a special arrangement by Jerry Estes (Music) of John Hartford’s ’56 “Gentle on My Mind” alongside violinist Ginna Doyle ’13 and the faculty band (Drew Battles\, Jerry Estes\, Anita Hagerman and Taylor Pietz). Click here to view snippets of their performances. \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nClick here for even more photos from our Centennial launch celebration via Andrew Newman ’87’s SmugMug page.

SUMMARY:Bonsack Gallery Opening: Jiggety Jig
DESCRIPTION:Jiggety Jig\, featuring the work of beadist Jan Schwab Huling ’72\, in on display in the Bonsack Gallery through November 29\, 2022. The show opened October 8\, 2022\, as part of Burroughs’ Centennial celebration. \n \nAbout the Artist\nJan Huling was born in Chicago and raised in St. Louis. After attending the Kansas City Art Institute\, she started her career in greeting card design. She now works in New York City as a product designer\, children’s book author\, and beadist. Neither sketched nor planned\, Huling‘s three-dimensional works draw inspiration from her travels to India and Mexico\, as well as imagined\, playful scenes reminiscent of childhood fairy tales and fantasies. Her work is approachable yet evocative\, incorporating spiritual iconography alongside humorous artifacts of contemporary popular culture. The armatures for Huling’s sculptures are an unpredictable mix of forms ranging from Kewpie and Munny dolls to birds and tiny life-sized insects. In addition to seed beads\, Huling’s colorful sculptures incorporate a variety of found objects\, such as buttons\, coins\, tokens\, and costume jewelry. Huling’s slow and meticulous beading process\, the intricacy of her swirling\, hypnotic patterns\, and the spontaneous manner with which Huling approaches each new project results in sculpture that is both delicate and alluring to touch — simply put\, she transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Jan’s work is represented by Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nClick here for even more photos from our Centennial launch celebration via Andrew Newman ’87’s SmugMug page.
