SUMMARY:Bonsack Gallery Opening: Jiggety Jig
DESCRIPTION:Jiggety Jig\, featuring the work of beadist Jan Schwab Huling ’72\, in on display in the Bonsack Gallery through November 29\, 2022. The show opened October 8\, 2022\, as part of Burroughs’ Centennial celebration. \n \nAbout the Artist\nJan Huling was born in Chicago and raised in St. Louis. After attending the Kansas City Art Institute\, she started her career in greeting card design. She now works in New York City as a product designer\, children’s book author\, and beadist. Neither sketched nor planned\, Huling‘s three-dimensional works draw inspiration from her travels to India and Mexico\, as well as imagined\, playful scenes reminiscent of childhood fairy tales and fantasies. Her work is approachable yet evocative\, incorporating spiritual iconography alongside humorous artifacts of contemporary popular culture. The armatures for Huling’s sculptures are an unpredictable mix of forms ranging from Kewpie and Munny dolls to birds and tiny life-sized insects. In addition to seed beads\, Huling’s colorful sculptures incorporate a variety of found objects\, such as buttons\, coins\, tokens\, and costume jewelry. Huling’s slow and meticulous beading process\, the intricacy of her swirling\, hypnotic patterns\, and the spontaneous manner with which Huling approaches each new project results in sculpture that is both delicate and alluring to touch — simply put\, she transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Jan’s work is represented by Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nClick here for even more photos from our Centennial launch celebration via Andrew Newman ’87’s SmugMug page.

SUMMARY:An Evening With Brittany Packnett Cunningham '02
DESCRIPTION:Twenty-five years ago\, Brittany Packnett Cunningham ’02 was one of the founders of the student group Diversity E.T.C. (Education Through Communication) and served as a catalyzing force for so many of the initiatives that would follow. Since then\, she has been a consistent voice giving back to the Burroughs community through trainings\, speaking engagements\, and other partnerships with Daniel Harris and the Office of Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusivity & Engagement. \nBrittany was honored during assembly on Friday\, October 7 with both the Outstanding Alumnus and the Distinguished Service awards; she also spoke to Burroughs’ adult community on Thursday\, October 6. She is the first alum to receive both in a single year. The award was presented by JBS Alumni Board president Terry Riley Patton ‘77; Brittany’s family (including her brother\, Barrington Packnett ’07) were also in attendance. You can view snippets from the event here. \nFollowing Friday’s alumni awards presentation\, Brittany stayed on stage to participate in a student-led discussion with Ayomide Ajakaiye ‘25\, Alexander Doty ‘25\, and Delali Suggs-Akaffu ‘27 about her work as an activist during her time at Burroughs and beyond. The conversation continued after assembly with 1st period English and History classes.
